Seventh Sunday of Easter
First Lesson
Acts 1:6-14
So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time
going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" He said to them: "It is not for you
to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you
will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my
witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the
earth." After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a
cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky
as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them.
"Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky?
This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in
the same way you have seen him go into heaven." Then they returned to
Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day's walk
from the city. When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they
were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and
Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot,
and Judas son of James. They all joined together constantly in prayer, along
with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.
Psalm
Psalm 68:1-10, 32-35
May God arise, may his enemies be scattered; may his foes flee before
him.
As smoke is blown away by the wind, may you blow them away; as wax melts
before the fire, may the wicked perish before God.
But may the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; may they be happy and
joyful.
Sing to God, sing praise to his name, extol him who rides on the clouds --
his name is the LORD-- and rejoice before him.
A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy
dwelling.
God sets the lonely in families, he leads forth the prisoners with singing;
but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.
When you went out before your people, O God, when you marched through the
wasteland, Selah
the earth shook, the heavens poured down rain, before God, the One of Sinai,
before God, the God of Israel.
You gave abundant showers, O God; you refreshed your weary inheritance.
Your people settled in it, and from your bounty, O God, you provided for the
poor.
Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth, sing praise to the Lord, Selah
to him who rides the ancient skies above, who thunders with mighty voice.
Proclaim the power of God, whose majesty is over Israel, whose power is in
the skies.
You are awesome, O God, in your sanctuary; the God of Israel gives power and
strength to his people. Praise be to God!
Second Lesson
1 Peter 4:12-14; 5:6-11
Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering,
as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice that you
participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when
his glory is revealed. If you are insulted because of the name of Christ,
you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. Humble
yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in
due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be
self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring
lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith,
because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the
same kind of sufferings. And the God of all grace, who called you to his
eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will
himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the
power for ever and ever. Amen.
Gospel
John 17:1-11
After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:
"Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.
For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal
life to all those you have given him. Now this is eternal life: that they
may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. I
have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.
And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you
before the world began. "I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out
of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your
word. Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. For I
gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with
certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. I pray
for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me,
for they are yours. All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory
has come to me through them. I will remain in the world no longer, but they
are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by
the power of your name--the name you gave me--so that they may be one as we
are one.
Prayer of the Day
Almighty and eternal God, your Son our Savior is with you in eternal
glory. Give us faith to see that, true to his promise, he is among us still,
and will be with us to the end of time; who lives and reigns with you and
the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

The Day of Pentecost
First Lesson
Acts 2:1-21
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and
filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be
tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them
were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the
Spirit enabled them. Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews
from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came
together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own
language. Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are
speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own
native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia,
Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the
parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to
Judaism); Cretans and Arabs--we hear them declaring the wonders of God in
our own tongues!" Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does
this mean?" Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too
much wine. " Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and
addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let
me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. These men are not
drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning! No, this is what was
spoken by the prophet Joel: "`In the last days, God says, I will pour out my
Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men
will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both
men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will
prophesy. I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth
below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to
darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious
day of the Lord. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be
saved.'
Psalm
Psalm 104:24-34, 35b
How many are your works, O LORD! In wisdom you made them all; the earth
is full of your creatures.
There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number--
living things both large and small.
There the ships go to and fro, and the leviathan, which you formed to frolic
there.
These all look to you to give them their food at the proper time.
When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they
are satisfied with good things.
When you hide your face, they are terrified; when you take away their
breath, they die and return to the dust.
When you send your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the
earth.
May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD rejoice in his
works--
he who looks at the earth, and it trembles, who touches the mountains, and
they smoke.
I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as
I live.
May my meditation be pleasing to him, as I rejoice in the LORD.
Praise the LORD, O my soul. Praise the LORD.
Second Lesson
1 Corinthians 12:3b-13
No one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit. There are
different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of
service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the
same God works all of them in all men. Now to each one the manifestation of
the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the
Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means
of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of
healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another
prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in
different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of
tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives
them to each one, just as he determines. The body is a unit, though it is
made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one
body. So it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit
into one body--whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free--and we were all given
the one Spirit to drink.
Gospel
John 20:19-23
On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were
together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood
among them and said, "Peace be with you!" After he said this, he showed them
his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.
Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am
sending you." And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy
Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not
forgive them, they are not forgiven."
Prayer of the Day
God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, as you sent upon the disciples
the promised gift of the Holy Spirit, look upon your Church and open our
hearts to the power of the Spirit. Kindle in us the fire of your love, and
strengthen our lives for service in your kingdom; through your Son, Jesus
Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy
Spirit, one God, now and forever.

The Holy Trinity
First Sunday after Pentecost
First Lesson
Genesis 1:1 – 2:4a
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was
formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the
Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, "Let there be
light," and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he
separated the light from the darkness. God called the light "day," and the
darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was
morning--the first day. And God said, "Let there be an expanse between the
waters to separate water from water." So God made the expanse and separated
the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. God
called the expanse "sky." And there was evening, and there was morning--the
second day. And God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one
place, and let dry ground appear." And it was so. God called the dry ground
"land," and the gathered waters he called "seas." And God saw that it was
good. Then God said, "Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants
and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their
various kinds." And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing
seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it
according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. And there was
evening, and there was morning--the third day. And God said, "Let there be
lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let
them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, and let them be
lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth." And it was so.
God made two great lights--the greater light to govern the day and the
lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in
the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the
night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good.
And there was evening, and there was morning--the fourth day. And God said,
"Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth
across the expanse of the sky." So God created the great creatures of the
sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according
to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw
that it was good. God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in
number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the
earth." And there was evening, and there was morning--the fifth day. And God
said, "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds:
livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each
according to its kind." And it was so. God made the wild animals according
to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the
creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw
that it was good. Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our
likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the
air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that
move along the ground." So God created man in his own image, in the image of
God he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them and
said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue
it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every
living creature that moves on the ground." Then God said, "I give you every
seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has
fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of
the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on
the ground--everything that has the breath of life in it--I give every green
plant for food." And it was so. God saw all that he had made, and it was
very good. And there was evening, and there was morning--the sixth day. Thus
the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. By the
seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh
day he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and
made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he
had done. This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were
created.
Psalm
Psalm 8
O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have
set your glory above the heavens.
From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of
your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.
When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the
stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for
him?
You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with
glory and honor.
You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under
his feet:
all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field,
the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of
the seas.
O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
Second Lesson
2 Corinthians 13:11-13
Finally, brothers, good-by. Aim for perfection, listen to my appeal, be
of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.
Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints send their greetings.
Gospel
Matthew 28:16-20
Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus
had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some
doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on
earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And
surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
Prayer of the Day
Almighty God our Father, dwelling in majesty and mystery, renewing and
fulfilling creation by your eternal Spirit, and revealing your glory through
our Lord, Jesus Christ: Cleanse us from doubt and fear, and enable us to
worship you, with your Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, living and
reigning, now and forever.

Second Sunday after Pentecost
First Lesson
Isaiah 49:8-16a
This is what the LORD says: "In the time of my favor I will answer you,
and in the day of salvation I will help you; I will keep you and will make
you to be a covenant for the people, to restore the land and to reassign its
desolate inheritances, to say to the captives, `Come out,' and to those in
darkness, `Be free!' "They will feed beside the roads and find pasture on
every barren hill. They will neither hunger nor thirst, nor will the desert
heat or the sun beat upon them. He who has compassion on them will guide
them and lead them beside springs of water. I will turn all my mountains
into roads, and my highways will be raised up. See, they will come from
afar-- some from the north, some from the west, some from the region of
Aswan. " Shout for joy, O heavens; rejoice, O earth; burst into song, O
mountains! For the LORD comforts his people and will have compassion on his
afflicted ones. But Zion said, "The LORD has forsaken me, the Lord has
forgotten me." "Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no
compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not
forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands.”
Psalm
Psalm 131
My heart is not proud, O LORD, my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern
myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me.
But I have stilled and quieted my soul; like a weaned child with its mother,
like a weaned child is my soul within me.
O Israel, put your hope in the LORD both now and forevermore.
Second Lesson
1 Corinthians 4:1-5
So then, men ought to regard us as servants of Christ and as those
entrusted with the secret things of God. Now it is required that those who
have been given a trust must prove faithful. I care very little if I am
judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself. My
conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who
judges me. Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the
Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will
expose the motives of men's hearts. At that time each will receive his
praise from God.
Gospel
Matthew 6:24-34
"No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the
other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot
serve both God and Money. "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your
life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is
not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in
barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more
valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his
life? "And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field
grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all
his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the
grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the
fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? So do not
worry, saying, `What shall we eat?' or `What shall we drink?' or `What shall
we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly
Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his
righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore
do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day
has enough trouble of its own.
Prayer of the Day
Almighty and everlasting God, ruler of heaven and earth: Hear our prayer
and give us your peace now and forever; through your Son, Jesus Christ our
Lord.
