Second Sunday after Pentecost
First Lesson
1 Kings 17:17-24
Some time later the son of the woman who owned the house
became ill. He grew worse and worse, and finally stopped
breathing. She said to Elijah, "What do you have against me, man
of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son?"
"Give me your son," Elijah replied. He took him from her arms,
carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him
on his bed. Then he cried out to the LORD, "O LORD my God, have
you brought tragedy also upon this widow I am staying with, by
causing her son to die?" Then he stretched himself out on the
boy three times and cried to the LORD, "O LORD my God, let this
boy's life return to him!" The LORD heard Elijah's cry, and the
boy's life returned to him, and he lived. Elijah picked up the
child and carried him down from the room into the house. He gave
him to his mother and said, "Look, your son is alive!" Then the
woman said to Elijah, "Now I know that you are a man of God and
that the word of the LORD from your mouth is the truth."
Psalm
Psalm 30
I will exalt you, O LORD, for you lifted me out of the depths
and did not let my enemies gloat over me.
O LORD my God, I called to you for help and you healed me.
O LORD, you brought me up from the grave; you spared me from
going down into the pit.
Sing to the LORD, you saints of his; praise his holy name.
For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a
lifetime; weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in
the morning.
When I felt secure, I said, "I will never be shaken."
O LORD, when you favored me, you made my mountain stand firm;
but when you hid your face, I was dismayed.
To you, O LORD, I called; to the Lord I cried for mercy:
"What gain is there in my destruction, in my going down into the
pit? Will the dust praise you? Will it proclaim your
faithfulness?
Hear, O LORD, and be merciful to me; O LORD, be my help."
You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and
clothed me with joy,
that my heart may sing to you and not be silent. O LORD my God,
I will give you thanks forever.
Second Lesson
Galatians 1:11-24
I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel I preached is
not something that man made up. I did not receive it from any
man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation
from Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my previous way of life
in Judaism, how intensely I persecuted the church of God and
tried to destroy it. I was advancing in Judaism beyond many Jews
of my own age and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my
fathers. But when God, who set me apart from birth and called me
by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son in me so that I
might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not consult any man,
nor did I go up to Jerusalem to see those who were apostles
before I was, but I went immediately into Arabia and later
returned to Damascus. Then after three years, I went up to
Jerusalem to get acquainted with Peter and stayed with him
fifteen days. I saw none of the other apostles--only James, the
Lord's brother. I assure you before God that what I am writing
you is no lie. Later I went to Syria and Cilicia. I was
personally unknown to the churches of Judea that are in Christ.
They only heard the report: "The man who formerly persecuted us
is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy." And they
praised God because of me.
Gospel
Luke 7:11-17
Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his
disciples and a large crowd went along with him. As he
approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried
out--the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a
large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her,
his heart went out to her and he said, "Don't cry." Then he went
up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. He
said, "Young man, I say to you, get up!" The dead man sat up and
began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. They were
all filled with awe and praised God. "A great prophet has
appeared among us," they said. "God has come to help his
people." This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and
the surrounding country.
Prayer of the Day
O God, the strength of those who hope in
you: Be present and hear our prayers; and, because in the
weakness of our mortal nature we can do nothing good without
you, give us the help of your grace, so that in keeping your
commandments we may please you in will and deed; through your
Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Third Sunday after Pentecost
First Lesson
2 Samuel 11:26 – 12:10, 13-15
When Uriah's wife heard that her husband was dead, she
mourned for him. After the time of mourning was over, David had
her brought to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a
son. But the thing David had done displeased the LORD. The LORD
sent Nathan to David. When he came to him, he said, "There were
two men in a certain town, one rich and the other poor. The rich
man had a very large number of sheep and cattle, but the poor
man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He
raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared
his food, drank from his cup and even slept in his arms. It was
like a daughter to him. "Now a traveler came to the rich man,
but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or
cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him.
Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and
prepared it for the one who had come to him." David burned with
anger against the man and said to Nathan, "As surely as the LORD
lives, the man who did this deserves to die! He must pay for
that lamb four times over, because he did such a thing and had
no pity." Then Nathan said to David, "You are the man! This is
what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: `I anointed you king
over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. I gave
your master's house to you, and your master's wives into your
arms. I gave you the house of Israel and Judah. And if all this
had been too little, I would have given you even more. Why did
you despise the word of the LORD by doing what is evil in his
eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took
his wife to be your own. You killed him with the sword of the
Ammonites. Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your
house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the
Hittite to be your own.' Then David said to Nathan, "I have
sinned against the LORD." Nathan replied, "The LORD
has taken away your sin. You are not going to die. But because
by doing this you have made the enemies of the LORD show utter
contempt, the son born to you will die." After Nathan had gone
home, the LORD struck the child that Uriah's wife had borne to
David, and he became ill.
Psalm
Psalm 32
Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins
are covered.
Blessed is the man whose sin the LORD does not count against him
and in whose spirit is no deceit.
When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all
day long.
For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was
sapped as in the heat of summer. Selah
Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my
iniquity. I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the
LORD"-- and you forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah
Therefore let everyone who is godly pray to you while you may be
found; surely when the mighty waters rise, they will not reach
him.
You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and
surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I
will counsel you and watch over you.
Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no
understanding but must be controlled by bit and bridle or they
will not come to you.
Many are the woes of the wicked, but the LORD's unfailing love
surrounds the man who trusts in him.
Rejoice in the LORD and be glad, you righteous; sing, all you
who are upright in heart!
Second Lesson
Galatians 2:15-21
"We who are Jews by birth and not `Gentile sinners' know that
a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in
Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus
that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing
the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified.
"If, while we seek to be justified in Christ, it becomes evident
that we ourselves are sinners, does that mean that Christ
promotes sin? Absolutely not! If I rebuild what I destroyed, I
prove that I am a lawbreaker. For through the law I died to the
law so that I might live for God. I have been crucified with
Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I
live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved
me and gave himself for me. I do not set aside the grace of God,
for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ
died for nothing!"
Gospel
Luke 7:36 – 8:3
Now one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with
him, so he went to the Pharisee's house and reclined at the
table. When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town
learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's house, she
brought an alabaster jar of perfume, and as she stood behind him
at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears.
Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured
perfume on them. When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this,
he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would know
who is touching him and what kind of woman she is--that she is a
sinner." Jesus answered him, "Simon, I have something to tell
you." "Tell me, teacher," he said. "Two men owed
money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred
denarii, and the other fifty. Neither of them had the
money to pay him back, so he canceled the debts of both. Now
which of them will love him more?" Simon replied, "I suppose the
one who had the bigger debt canceled." "You have
judged correctly," Jesus said. Then he turned toward the woman
and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I came into your
house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my
feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not
give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not
stopped kissing my feet. You did not put oil on my head, but she
has poured perfume on my feet. Therefore, I tell you, her many
sins have been forgiven--for she loved much. But he who has been
forgiven little loves little." Then Jesus said to her, "Your
sins are forgiven." The other guests began to say among
themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?" Jesus said to
the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace." After this,
Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another,
proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were
with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits
and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had
come out; Joanna the wife of Cuza, the manager of Herod's
household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to
support them out of their own means.
Prayer of the Day
God, our maker and redeemer, you have made
us a new company of priests to bear witness to the Gospel.
Enable us to be faithful to our calling to make known your
promises to all the world; through your Son, Jesus Christ our
Lord.

Fourth Sunday after Pentecost
First Lesson
Isaiah 65:1-9
"I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me; I was
found by those who did not seek me. To a nation that did not
call on my name, I said, `Here am I, here am I.' All day long I
have held out my hands to an obstinate people, who walk in ways
not good, pursuing their own imaginations-- a people who
continually provoke me to my very face, offering sacrifices in
gardens and burning incense on altars of brick; who sit among
the graves and spend their nights keeping secret vigil; who eat
the flesh of pigs, and whose pots hold broth of unclean meat;
who say, `Keep away; don't come near me, for I am too sacred for
you!' Such people are smoke in my nostrils, a fire that keeps
burning all day. "See, it stands written before me: I will not
keep silent but will pay back in full; I will pay it back into
their laps-- both your sins and the sins of your fathers," says
the LORD. "Because they burned sacrifices on the mountains and
defied me on the hills, I will measure into their laps the full
payment for their former deeds." This is what the LORD says: "As
when juice is still found in a cluster of grapes and men say,
`Don't destroy it, there is yet some good in it,' so will I do
in behalf of my servants; I will not destroy them all. I will
bring forth descendants from Jacob, and from Judah those who
will possess my mountains; my chosen people will inherit them,
and there will my servants live.
Psalm
Psalm 22:19-28
But you, O LORD, be not far off; O my Strength, come quickly
to help me.
Deliver my life from the sword, my precious life from the power
of the dogs.
Rescue me from the mouth of the lions; save me from the horns of
the wild oxen.
I will declare your name to my brothers; in the congregation I
will praise you.
You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob,
honor him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!
For he has not despised or disdained the suffering of the
afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has
listened to his cry for help.
From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly;
before those who fear you will I fulfill my vows.
The poor will eat and be satisfied; they who seek the LORD will
praise him-- may your hearts live forever!
All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD,
and all the families of the nations will bow down before him,
for dominion belongs to the LORD and he rules over the nations.
Second Lesson
Galatians 3:23-29
Before this faith came, we were held prisoners by the law,
locked up until faith should be revealed. So the law was put in
charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith.
Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision
of the law. You are all sons of God through faith in Christ
Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed
yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave
nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs
according to the promise.
Gospel
Luke 8:26-39
They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across
the lake from Galilee. When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by
a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man
had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the
tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet,
shouting at the top of his voice, "What do you want with me,
Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don't torture me!"
For Jesus had commanded the evil spirit to come out of the man.
Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and
foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been
driven by the demon into solitary places. Jesus asked him, "What
is your name?" "Legion," he replied, because many
demons had gone into him. And they begged him repeatedly not to
order them to go into the Abyss. A large herd of pigs was
feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let
them go into them, and he gave them permission. When the demons
came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd
rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. When
those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and
reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went
out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they
found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at
Jesus' feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were
afraid. Those who had seen it told the people how the
demon-possessed man had been cured. Then all the people of the
region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they
were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left. The
man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but
Jesus sent him away, saying, "Return home and tell how much God
has done for you." So the man went away and told all over town
how much Jesus had done for him.
Prayer of the Day
O God our defender, storms rage about us
and cause us to be afraid. Rescue your people from despair,
deliver your sons and daughters from fear, and preserve us all
from unbelief; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Fifth Sunday after Pentecost
First Lesson
1 Kings 19:15-16, 19-21
The LORD said to him, "Go back the way you came, and go to
the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king
over Aram. Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and
anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as
prophet. So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of
Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself
was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw
his cloak around him. Elisha then left his oxen and ran after
Elijah. "Let me kiss my father and mother good-by," he said,
"and then I will come with you." "Go back," Elijah
replied. "What have I done to you?" So Elisha left him and went
back. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned
the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the
people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and
became his attendant.
Psalm
Psalm 16
Keep me safe, O God, for in you I take refuge.
I said to the LORD, "You are my Lord; apart from you I have no
good thing."
As for the saints who are in the land, they are the glorious
ones in whom is all my delight.
The sorrows of those will increase who run after other gods. I
will not pour out their libations of blood or take up their
names on my lips.
LORD, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made
my lot secure.
The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely
I have a delightful inheritance.
I will praise the LORD, who counsels me; even at night my heart
instructs me.
I have set the LORD always before me. Because he is at my right
hand, I will not be shaken.
Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also
will rest secure,
because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let
your Holy One see decay.
You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me
with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right
hand.
Second Lesson
Galatians 5:1, 13-25
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm,
then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of
slavery. You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not
use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one
another in love. The entire law is summed up in a single
command: "Love your neighbor as yourself." If you keep on biting
and devouring each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by
each other. So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not
gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature
desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is
contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each
other, so that you do not do what you want. But if you are led
by the Spirit, you are not under law. The acts of the sinful
nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;
idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of
rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy;
drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before,
that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of
God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ
Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and
desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with
the Spirit.
Gospel
Luke 9:51-62
As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven,
Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. And he sent messengers
on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready
for him; but the people there did not welcome him, because he
was heading for Jerusalem. When the disciples James and John saw
this, they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from
heaven to destroy them?" But Jesus turned and rebuked them, and
they went to another village. As they were walking along the
road, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go."
Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have
nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." He said
to another man, "Follow me." But the man replied,
"Lord, first let me go and bury my father." Jesus said to him,
"Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the
kingdom of God." Still another said, "I will follow you, Lord;
but first let me go back and say good-by to my family." Jesus
replied, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is
fit for service in the kingdom of God."
Prayer of the Day
O God, you have prepared for those who love
you joys beyond understanding. Pour into our hearts such love
for you that, loving you above all things, we may obtain your
promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through your Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord.
